Carcinogens and most common occupations

 

 There are thousands of jobs or occupations which entail a high risk of disease caused by exposure to chemical agents and carcinogens.    Asbestos is most visible and prevalent.  There is an entire page on this site that addresses the risks of asbestos and occupations.  The list below is only a sample of the population that is exposed to to other Cancer causing agents.

Asbestos--

Diesel Fuel---Metal workers, bus and large vehicle drivers, miners

Shift Work--Emergency workers, nurses, overnight shift employees

Second Hand Work Smoke-Construction Workers, miners, bus and large vehicle drivers

Ionizing Radiation-Health Professionals, Scientist, Nurse, Health Care Workers

PAH (Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbons--These are chemicals formed when coal, oil or gas, garbage, meat or other substances are burned.  These are chemicals made in many products such as coal tar, creosote, roofing tar, pesticides, mothballs, dandruff shampoos, and some medicines.--All employees working with these  have higher incidences.

Silica-- Construction workers, miners, farmers. foundry workers

Wood Dust-Carpenters, Laborers, Printers

Cleaning Solutions and Solvents--Janitors, Machinists

Formaldehyde--Animal/Horticultural workers, health professionals, health support workers

Lead- (not a carcinogen but devastating effects)-Miners, vehicle workers, emergency workers, painters

Ethylene oxide--This is a chemical used as a fumigant in certain agricultural products and a sterilizing agent for medical equipment and supplies

Trichloroethylene--This is a degreasing agent used in many manufacturing industries, as a cleaning agent. It is in many places.
